Apple has confirmed that iOS 27 will be released to the public on Monday, September 14, a few days ahead of the iPhone 18 Pro hitting stores. The update supports every iPhone back to the iPhone 11 and the second-generation iPhone SE, though the marquee AI features require newer hardware: Apple Intelligence and Siri AI need an iPhone 15 Pro or later, per Macworld.
Siri, rebuilt
The headline change is Siri AI, a redesigned assistant that combines personal context, on-screen awareness and web knowledge. It can answer follow-up questions, act on what is currently on screen, and gets its own dedicated Siri app with conversation history synced privately through iCloud. It ships as a beta in English only, with more languages promised for October.
The everyday improvements
Beyond Siri, the update is full of practical additions:
- Photos gains Spatial Reframing, an Extend tool that generates content beyond a photo's borders, and a faster Clean Up tool. On the Lock Screen, Apple Intelligence can automatically expand a tightly cropped image to fill the display.
- A new compact clock mode moves the time alongside the date and widgets to show more wallpaper.
- Safari groups tabs by topic, adds a Notify Me option for page changes, and can build custom extensions from a plain-language description.
- Messages offers AI-suggested replies that match your writing style and context-aware actions such as creating reminders from a conversation.
- Independent volume controls for ringtones, alarms and alerts, plus custom EQ for compatible AirPods.
- New parental controls, including an Ask to Browse option for websites.
- Apple Gift Cards can be redeemed by tapping the card to the back of the phone.
Speed and reliability
Apple claims apps launch up to 30 percent faster, new photos appear in the library up to 70 percent faster, and AirDrop transfers are up to 80 percent quicker. Apple also says Spotlight, Photos and Mail sit on a rebuilt search index that stays current throughout the day. One feature, iPhone Handoff, is limited to T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom customers at launch.
