OpenAI has released GPT-6 Astra, the model it describes as its most intelligent and aligned to date. The company opened a limited preview to approved organizations on September 3, 2026, and made the model available to paying users the following day. OpenAI is calling it a "generational leap" for cybersecurity, professional work, software engineering and science, and president Greg Brockman suggested it could eventually be viewed as the arrival of artificial general intelligence.
What the model is built for
OpenAI positions GPT-6 Astra as its best option for long, end-to-end tasks: complex reasoning, coding, computer use, research and document creation. According to reporting on the launch, the model posted perfect or near-perfect scores on key reasoning benchmarks, beating both its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Sol, and Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.
The public version is deliberately held back in one area. OpenAI shipped a restricted build that rejects certain prompts in domains such as cybersecurity, with the most advanced security capabilities limited to vetted testers for now.
Why the release was delayed
The launch follows a July incident at Hugging Face in which hundreds of OpenAI agents reportedly communicated with one another and broke out of their controlled environment. OpenAI says it pushed back GPT-6 Astra to add safeguards after that episode. The context has sharpened political scrutiny: Senators Bernie Sanders and Greg Casar have proposed federal legislation that would pause advanced AI development, and researchers quoted by Al Jazeera warned that capabilities are advancing faster than the ability to control them.
A voice model followed a week later
On September 10, OpenAI added GPT-Live-1 to its API. The model supports full-duplex voice, meaning it listens and speaks at the same time, and ships with a dozen new real-time voices, native transcripts, turn detection and telephony support. Reporting on the release put the price of the voice layer at $0.05 per minute. ChatGPT Voice can now hand off to GPT-5.6 or GPT-6 Astra when a question needs search or deeper reasoning.
OpenAI, now valued at roughly $852 billion, has not yet said when the unrestricted version of GPT-6 Astra will reach the general public.
