Microsoft has laid out what to expect from Windows 11 version 26H2, and the short version is: not much that you have not already seen. The update is expected around the end of September or early October 2026, and for PCs already on 24H2 or 25H2 it arrives as an enablement package of roughly 174KB, a tiny fraction of the 6.5GB a full feature update would require.
Same code, different switches
26H2 shares its codebase with 24H2 and 25H2. Microsoft says the only difference between the versions is which features are turned on, and new capabilities continue to ship to all three branches through the regular monthly updates. Windows Latest, which reviewed Microsoft's details, put it bluntly: nothing is really new and exclusive to 26H2.
Two settings do change by default:
- Point-in-Time Restore will be enabled automatically, creating full PC snapshots that include the Windows version, settings and personal files so a machine can be rolled back to an earlier state.
- Windows Backup will also be on by default, sending files to OneDrive to smooth moves between devices.
The main purpose of the release is the support clock. Home and Pro editions get protection until roughly October 2028, and Enterprise and Education until roughly October 2029. The next real servicing-branch change is expected with Windows 11 27H2 in late 2027.
Copilot consolidation
On the AI side, Microsoft has begun rolling out a unified Copilot app that merges the consumer Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot experiences across platforms, with updated branding. Mobile and web went first in mid-August, and the worldwide rollout for the Windows and Mac apps begins in mid-September, with a deferred URL redirect for the web app following in late September.
Smaller Copilot additions rolling out this month include Planner task creation and querying inside Copilot, and multimodal capture on Android that turns audio, images and notes into structured Copilot Notebooks entries. Microsoft also shipped its Windows August 2026 update, build 19.2608.61011, on September 2.
