Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs announced a multi-year strategic agreement on September 10, 2026, that begins with a new licensed AI music creation platform. The deal covers both licensing and joint product development and is ElevenLabs' first agreement with a major record label.

What fans will be able to do

The platform, still in development, is designed to let fans co-create with music from participating artists and songwriters. The companies described three starting points:

  • Remixes and mashups of existing tracks.
  • New interpretations of songs.
  • Personalized vocal experiences.

The key word is participating. The platform is built on licensed catalogs, artists opt in, and the companies say artists and songwriters will share in the value created. Beyond the fan platform, the agreement includes jointly developed AI audio products for artists and songwriters, with more products and fan experiences promised in the months and years ahead.

Skipping the lawsuit

The music industry's relationship with generative AI has mostly run through courtrooms, with labels suing AI music startups over training data. Coverage of this deal noted what makes it different: ElevenLabs and Universal reached a licensing arrangement without litigating first. Both companies framed the agreement around a shared commitment that AI music innovation should be built responsibly, respect human artistry and compensate the people who made the original work.

Why it matters for creators

For ElevenLabs, best known for voice synthesis and dubbing, the deal moves the company squarely into music with the backing of the world's largest label. For Universal, it is a way to capture fan demand for AI remixes on terms the label controls rather than leaving that activity to unlicensed tools.

Whether artists sign up in large numbers will decide how useful the platform is. The companies have not announced a launch date, pricing or which artists have opted in so far.
